Bio: Just recently named, Female Performer of the Year in the New England Music Awards, 2012 Boston Music Award nominee for Singer/Songwriter of the year, Sarah Blacker, was recently called "one of the brighter artists to grab our attention recently," by national Roots publication, No Depression. She is a full-time singer/songwriter on the verge of releasing her 3rd album, which has already begun receiving airtime on local NPR station, WUMB. Last year, Blacker was also nominated as New England Music Awards 'Female Performer of the Year,' and her music video for her single, 'Knocked the Winds' won runner up in the Limelight Magazine's Video of the Year, wherein she was nominated as Singer/Songwriter of the year in 2012. She was the winner of the Radio 92.9 / Boch Subaru contest and became the face and voice of their New England ad campaign for "ooh ooh it's love," NE Subaru, and was also named 'Artist of the Year' by My Rural Radio in 2011. Her song, 'Smell of Caramel,' was recently featured on the MTV show, Jersey Shore, and she was an emerging artist at the historical Falcon Ridge Folk Festival this past summer. In just under 3 years, she has garnered these accolades, performed at SXSW, CMJ and a sold-out tour of Germany, and has shared the stage with America, Rusted Root, Paula Cole, The Wood Brothers, Sara Bareilles, Jason Isbell, Carbon Leaf, Rusted Root, and Anais Mitchell to name just a few. Her entrancing voice, poignant and emotionally charged lyrics, and mature songwriting has this artist on pace to go nowhere but up. www.sarahblacker.com

Friendly People

Band Members: Pat McCusker, Mitchell Stewart, Jeff Butcher, Matt Gerhard, Andrew Sarlo, Sebastian Modak, and Davis Rowan

What started as a jam in a Cambridge living room has led to a recently released debut album, 'Shake' and a tour across America to perform at this year's South By Southwest Festival. After spending their first year writing and recording, they entered local radio station 95.5 WBRU's “Rock Hunt” competition in 2011 and made it to the finals. Following this success, they went into the studio to record their debut ep “Lover's Trance” which they used to win the Boston “Hard Rock Rising” contest, the Rhode Island College's “Rock Hunt,” and the Rhode Show's “Big Break” contest. Over 100 college format radio stations added “Lover's Trance,” to their playlists and the ep licensed to over fifteen different TV shows.

Their next goal involved trekking to industry mecca SXSW in March of this year. Still Life Moves is inspired from that journey and represents a creative shift for the young talents. Being among literally thousands of dedicated musicians from around the world inspired the boys to focus more seriously on their craft. With Still Life Moves the guys focused much less on creating big hooks and sing-along melodies (although they too have a place on this record). In particular, the band worked on introducing a bigger, arena-size rock sound by engaging in communal writing and recording processes. Now barely out of college and with a new sound under their belt, Last One Out is ready to take their music beyond Providence and Austin.

In an age of electro-pop, over-produced, indie rock, Twin Berlin rebels against the passing fad to bring the revival of no-frills, in-your-face rock and roll. And 2011 is about to be their year.
In 2009, Twin Berlin was recognized by MTV, being nominated as the Best Breakout Boston band and playing a show on the 2009 VMA tour alongside All Time Low and The White Tie Affair. Consequently, Twin Berlin was launched into Comcast’s “On Demand” air time, and into rotation on Boston’s biggest indie/alternative radio station, WFNX. Just two months later, Twin Berlin conquered the Big Apple, as well, for the CMJ Music Marathon.
By 2010, Twin Berlin had broken out against the conventional indie-dance circuit, earning a reputation for a rabid, powerful live show. Garnering attention from the local press, Boston Music Spotlight named Twin Berlin as one of the eleven bands to watch for in 2011. They couldn’t have been any closer to the truth.
While recording new material in the studio this year, Mikey Welsh, formerly of the band Weezer, stepped in to create the cover art. When asked about the band in an interview, Welsh responded, “they’re young, they’re good-looking...they craft really good songs.” But, before the recordings could even be finished, Travis Barker of Blink-182 became involved and selected Twin Berlin as the winner of Guitar Center’s “Your Next Record”, inviting them to record with him in Los Angeles, and even offering to play along on their new single.
To say the very least, Twin Berlin is the band to notice in 2013. Don’t miss out on the next great thing that’s about to happen to rock and roll.

Western Education

Will (bass, production) answered the ad in late October and Georgio (guitar) answered around the start of 2011.
The Rice Cakes began in 2006 when 17-year-old Roz released her solo album The Ecotones. Recorded by friends in kitchens, closets, and living rooms, the album was pressed and released by Roz out of her bedroom. The album sold over 500 copies throughout Providence without any professional distribution.
Roz began playing throughout the North East with good friend and bassist John Cairo. The pair developed a staunch local following with the help of their sweet melodies and charismatic stage show. It wasn't long before they met Casey Belisle, a friendly and talented drummer playing in a progressive noise band.
The Rice Cakes were born.
The Rice Cakes recorded "The Crunch EP" in the winter of 2008 and toured the following summer. The songs tell stories. The new CD has tracks that tell stories of escaping, trusting someone to always be there, hate, hoping for a friend to be OK, and of losing a love until the summertime.
When you listen, you will hear technical double-kick drumbeats, mad guitar solos, complementing keys, and clean melodic vocals with some rasp thrown in when needed.
The whole story has not yet been written.
Await Rescue will give you a break from whatever you are listening to. They aren’t over-produced pop and don’t play into the current retro crazes overtaking music, nor can they stand unable-to-be-stomached modern “Rock” sound that has embarrassed the genre they love so much. Instead, the sounds on Await Rescue’s “Everyone You Know“ EP can best be described as the stadium-sized hooks and songwriting sensibilities of Foo Fighters meet the aggression and raw energy of Every Time I Die.
Await Rescue is currently supporting “Everyone You Know” (released April 2013), and they could tell you about all the effort, sweat, late nights/early mornings, beers, facial hair, and moments of almost passing out in an old, spider-infested 100-degree warehouse that went into making Everyone You Know, but the record deserves more than that. The album’s beginnings were born at the band’s lowest point when they were ensnared in a never-ending bassist search that stretched out over 8 months, and although “Everyone You Know” is the EP’s anthemic title track, “Thanks, But No Thanks” was the song that kept Johnny, Drew, and Matt moving forward even when no bass prospects were the horizon and set the tone for the songs that followed. “Thanks, But No Thanks” speaks to how the members could have given up on Await Rescue to pursue other musical opportunities but which they declined out of hand for a love of doing what they do together as a unit and the firm belief that no one else is making the aggressive Rock music anymore like the tracks they have crafted and road-tested over the last year. It was also the first track finalized with bassist Corey Fyfe in tow that galvanized the direction of the rest of the EP: pure, raw, Rock with no agenda except to explode out of the speakers.
All four members now feel a pressure to make up for lost time and to prove themselves in the oversaturated and hyper pressurized music scene, and in that spirit, Await Rescue will load up the trailer, make sure it’s locked, and take these songs to any sweaty venue willing to have them. God bless Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Penned by frontman Paul Cowgill and arranged by the band, the music hovers between an upbeat pop sensibility and a darker folk rock side, with their first single drawing comparisons to Wilco’s “lush arrangement of strings, acoustic guitars, and plodding drum lines” (MP3.com).
Their blend of indie rock and folk music nimbly hops between many forms - from 60s rock to newgrass - and none are spared on their debut release. Recording for the Side Two of Planted begins as soon as the band can scrape together enough money, on the heels of their August 2012 tour through the Midwest and East Coast.
The band formed in June of 2011 and has been steadily winning over the hearts and ears of fans ever since.
“[Paul] has the ability to sing with the genteelness of a folk idol while retaining a controlled manic energy just beneath the surface, waiting to erupt into one of his many pop-laden choruses.” Hillman adds, “…it’s the musicians and instrumentation that encompass Paul Cowgill’s folksy pop melodies that truly differentiates this indie-rock sextet” - Allston Pudding.
