Fitz and the Tantrums

Out Of My League

How much weight does an endorsement from Rolling Stone hold?  Well, you may balk at the plug but it’s sure better than getting panned by the rag.  Right?  Right.  The six piece LA soul and funk influenced indie pop rock band with a curious mass appeal, was named Rolling Stone’s “band to watch” in the Spring of 2011 after their debut studio album “Pickin’ up the Pieces” reached number one on Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart.  But what about this new track, Amy, you ask?  For starters, Fitz and the Tantrums, who got their name simply because lead guy, Michael Fitzpatrick's nick-name, no surprise, is "Fitz".  The "Tantrums" part is still nondescript other than admitting that a friend suggested it and it stuck because, as Fitzpatrick says, "it's a name that captures what we are all about".  I think I can understand that...unpredictible, on their own path perhaps?  Which is evident since they seemed to morph their 60’s “Money Grabber” vibe of 2011 into an 80’s new wave sensibility thanks to the driving drum beat, use of synth and even the scratch and echo of the background vocals on this track.  But what I, a jaded romantic by the way, like so much about this particular track is it’s simple tale (it’s a love song).  And the band expresses the message so brilliantly through their arrangement and energy of the music.  "Out of My League" is an infectious, shake what your mamma gave you (at least a little) dance cut balanced with a piano-pounding ballad and becomes complete thanks to it's kickin’ sax solo. But don’t take my word for it or Rolling Stone’s for that matter…check it out below.  The song will appear on their upcoming LP More Than Just A Dream, which is due May 7th.

Apparently they are working on an official video still for this song-so this live version from the Red Bull Lounge during last month's South by Southwest music industry festival and conference in Austin, TX is all I could come up with...

Good song and stripy video for the studio version. They rock and people must understand that they are truly a touring American band. This is their income, as well as many others depending on them
